YOUR PROTECTIONS
The federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in housing based
on race, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender
identity), national origin, familial status, or disability.

Maryland law adds protections including marital status, sexual orientation,
gender identity, and — in many jurisdictions — source of income, which means a
landlord may not refuse you solely because you use a Housing Choice Voucher or
other lawful subsidy. Prince George's, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel counties
each have local fair housing provisions; verify the current rules for your
jurisdiction.

EXAMPLES OF ILLEGAL CONDUCT
- Refusing to rent, or lying about availability
- Applying different rent, deposit, or screening standards to some applicants
- Steering applicants toward or away from certain buildings or neighborhoods
- Refusing a reasonable accommodation or modification for a disability
- Advertising that states a preference or limitation
- Harassment or retaliation after a complaint

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS
You may request a change in rules, policies, or physical features so you can
use your home fully — for example an assigned accessible parking space, a
grab bar, or permission for an assistance animal. Put the request in writing
and keep a copy.

Most complaints must be filed within one year of the incident. Save documents,
texts, emails, names, and dates.
