BEFORE YOU START LOOKING
[ ] Write down your total monthly household income (all sources)
[ ] Calculate what you can afford for rent plus utilities
[ ] List every adult who will be on the lease
[ ] Note credit or rental history issues you may need to explain
[ ] Decide which counties and neighborhoods work for you
[ ] Note commute, school, and transit needs
[ ] Note accessibility needs (first floor, elevator, roll-in shower, etc.)

DOCUMENTS TO GATHER
[ ] Photo ID for every adult
[ ] Social Security cards, if available
[ ] Proof of income (pay stubs, benefit letters, award letters)
[ ] Bank statements for the last 2–3 months
[ ] Rental history and landlord references
[ ] DD-214 or VA documentation, for veterans
[ ] Disability documentation, if requesting an accommodation

MONEY TO PLAN FOR

[ ] Security deposit
[ ] First month's rent
[ ] Utility deposits and connection fees
[ ] Moving costs

QUESTIONS TO ASK EVERY LANDLORD
[ ] What is the total monthly cost, including utilities and fees?
[ ] What income and credit standards apply?
[ ] Do you accept Housing Choice Vouchers or other subsidies?
[ ] What is the lease term and renewal policy?
[ ] Who handles maintenance requests, and how?
